Medicare Advantage Insurance

What Is Medicare Part C or Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans, also called Medicare Part C, are Medicare-approved private health insurance plans for people enrolled in Original Medicare Parts A and B.

Private Plan Alternative:

When you join a Medicare Advantage plan, you are still in the Medicare program and must continue paying your Part B premium. These plans must provide at least the same coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B.

Additional Benefits:

Many Medicare Advantage plans include extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, wellness programs, and prescription drug coverage. Plans may also include provider networks, referrals, copays, deductibles, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum.

Medicare Advantage Plan Options

Medicare Advantage plans can vary by county, carrier, provider network, premium, prescription drug coverage, and out-of-pocket costs. Comparing the plans available in your area is important because benefits and rules can differ from one plan to another.

HMO vs PPO
Enrollment

Medicare Advantage plan options may include Health Maintenance Organization plans, Preferred Provider Organization plans, Private Fee-for-Service plans, Special Needs Plans, HMO Point-of-Service plans, and Medical Savings Account plans. Availability depends on where you live and which carriers offer coverage in your area.

An HMO plan usually requires you to use doctors and hospitals within the plan network, except in emergencies. A PPO plan also has a network, but typically gives you the option to use out-of-network providers at a higher cost. Before choosing any Medicare Advantage plan, it is important to confirm that your preferred doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions are covered.

You can generally join a Medicare Advantage plan if you live in the plan’s service area and have Medicare Parts A and B. The Annual Election Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year, with coverage beginning January 1. If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs from January 1 through March 31.

Medicare Advantage plans may help reduce uncertainty by replacing the open-ended 20% coinsurance of Original Medicare with plan-specific copays, deductibles, and an annual out-of-pocket maximum. However, costs and rules vary by plan, so it is important to review the Summary of Benefits carefully.

Some Medicare Advantage plans are Special Needs Plans, or SNPs. These plans are designed for people with certain chronic conditions, people who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid, or people who live in certain institutions such as long-term care facilities.
